HC Deb 18 June 1974 vol 875 cc83-4W
37. Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how she accounts for the increase in notified cases of malaria in England and Wales in the period 1969–1973; and if she will make a statement.

Dr. Owen

Almost all the malaria notified in England and Wales during the period 1969 to 1973 was contracted abroad. The rise in the number of notifications is mainly due to increased travel to and from areas where malaria is endemic and improved surveillance.

A leaflet made available to persons travelling abroad warns them of the need to take prophylactic drugs when visiting an area where malaria exists.
