§ Mr. Robin F. Cookasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what would be the net cost of eliminating parental contributions from student grants, taking into account the increased revenue which would accrue from the reduction in the number of parents eligible for tax relief on dependants in full-time education.
§ Mr. Gerry FowlerIf abolition of the parental contribution were accompanied by the withdrawal of tax relief to parents in respect of their student children, the net cost for Great Britain might be in the region of £20 million to £30 million in the current year, depending on the basis on which the tax relief was withdrawn.
