HC Deb 12 June 1974 vol 874 cc577-8W
Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proposals he has put to the Northumberland Education Committee with regard to the future of Alnwick College of Education.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

My Department has invited the Northumberland Local Education Authority to consider the case for discontinuing initial teacher training at Alnwick College of Education in the context of the total future provision in its area, and to submit its views in order to enable my right hon. Friend to take a decision as soon as possible.

Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what building works have been put in approved programmes for Alnwick College of Education during the last three years; and what was the cost of those works.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

A major scheme to bring up to standard the library, teaching and communal accommodation was included in the programme for 1972–73 and a minor scheme of conversions to provide additional residential places was in the programme for 1973–74. The respective costs on tender were £178,852 and £18,384.
