HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc375-6W
The Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland under what circumstances were two members of the RUC ambushed recently in the Ballymena area; what was the extent of their injuries; what action was taken; and what arrests were made.

Mr. Orme

On Monday 22nd July 1974 at approximately 2 a.m., a RUC mobile patrol of three officers travelling on the Cushendale-Ballymena road was fired on by the occupants of an overtaking car. One officer was hit in the shoulder and another in the throat. The other officer was treated for shock.

No arrests have yet been made but the police are investigating the incident.

I am glad to be able to report that, although one of the officers is still detained in hospital, the condition of all three is satisfactory.
