HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc259-60W
Mr. Hurd

asked the Secretary of State of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what proposals he has made to the EEC Council of Ministers to deal with the continuing serious situation in the British pig industry.

Mr. Peart

I have discussed the pig situation on a number of occasions with my colleagues in the EEC Council of Ministers. In the light of those discussions not only have we introduced, with EEC agreement, our special pig subsidy, but also a number of Community measures have been brought in. In particular assisted private storage for pig-meat was introduced from 10th July. Also the increase in the EEC basic price due on 1st November is to be brought forward.

Mr. Fairgrieve

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he is making in Brussels regarding the present pig crisis in the United Kingdom; and if he has put forward any proposals for dealing with this problem on a European basis.
