HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc431-2W
Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many councils in Wales are currently negotiating with private builders to purchase plots in private estates for development.

Mr. Rowlands

I am not informed about the course of negotiations taking place between councils and private builders. There are currently no applications before me from councils seeking approval for the purchase of plots in private estates for development.

Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many negotiations have taken place successfully in Wales between councils and private builders or developers to enable the councils to purchase plots in private development estates.

Mr. Rowlands

My right hon. and learned Friend has not yet been asked to approve any proposals by councils to purchase plots in private development estates.

Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how much Government money has been allocated to local authorities for use for the purchase of private houses and/or plots in private development areas.

Mr. Rowlands

No specific sum has been allocated to local authorities. Each application is treated on its merits.

Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list in the OFFICIAL REPORT the names of local authorities which have given him notice of their intention to purchase new unoccupied houses on private estates and the names of those giving further consideration to the proposal; and, in each case, if he will give his estimate of the number of houses involved.

Mr. Rowlands

Local authorities in Wales which have submitted a formal application to purchase new unoccupied houses on private estates are as follows:

  • Llanelli BC.
  • Torfaen BC.
  • Lliw Valley BC.
  • Swansea CC.

  • South Pembrokeshire BC.
  • Islwyn BC.

The number of houses involved is 779. Information is not available about other authorities which may be giving consideration to the question.
