HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 c358W
Mr. Moate

asked the Lord President of the Council if there is a secretarial allowance paid to Members who are members of the European Assembly; and, if, so, what is the annual amount and if it is subject to United Kingdom taxation.

Mr. Edward Short

Allowances paid to members of the European Assembly are the concern of that assembly. However, I understand that such members may reclaim the cost of private engaged secretaries' assistance within a limit of 200 ua a month, equivalent in value to about £1,000 a year at current rates. As this payment is in reimbursement of actual expenditure it would not normally attract United Kingdom income tax.
