HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 c240W
Sir Raymond Gower

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will take steps to reduce the incidence of direct taxation on the pensions savings incomes of elderly retired people.

Mr. Michael Roberts

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make proposals for reducing the impact of direct taxation on the elderly.

Dr. Gilbert

I have noted the hon. Members' suggestion; but I would remind them that in this year's Budget my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer increased the figures for the income tax age exemption from £700 to £810 for a single person, and from £1,000 to £1,170 for a married couple. My right hon. Friend also increased the limit for marginal age exemption relief.
