HC Deb 31 July 1974 vol 878 cc306-10W
Mr. Spence

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will identify the location and present use of areas of land in England formerly derelict land and now reclaimed, indicating by whom such areas were reclaimed in each of the last 10 years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Denis Howell

The table below shows the acreage of land reclaimed year by year in each of the standard English regions. The figures are derived from surveys carried out by local authorities from 1964 onwards; information about the type of agency responsible for reclamation is available only for 1972. The present usage of the reclaimed areas is not known in detail, but most land reclaimed by local authorities is used for public open space or agriculture.

Mr. Spence

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will identify the locations of the areas of land in the Yorkshire and Humberside Region now classified as derelict which could be restored; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Denis Howell

The latest figures available relate to 31st December 1971. The following table shows for that date the acreage of land thought to justify restoration in each administrative county and county borough in the pre-1974 Yorkshire and Humberside Region.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many acres of derelict land have been cleared to date in the eight standard regions, and what is the total cost for each region.

Mr. Denis Howell

The tables below give for each of the pre-1974 standard regions the acreage of derelict land reclaimed by all agencies during the years 1964 to 1972 inclusive and the expenditure by local authorities on reclamation in the financial years 1968–69 to 1973–74 inclusive. The acreage figures are based on surveys carried out by local authorities; 1973 figures are not yet available. No regional breakdown of local authority expenditure is available for financial years before 1968–69 and I have no figures for private expenditure on reclamation.
