HC Deb 30 July 1974 vol 878 cc186-7W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will now set up a comprehensive research programme to discover how food production from marginal and hill land in Wales may be improved by sustainable methods.

Mr. John Morris

Programmes of research and development on systems of production suitable for marginal and hill land are already being carried out at the Welsh Plant Breeding Institute, Aberystwyth, at the Hill Farm Research Organisation in Edinburgh, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food's Experimental Husbandry Farm at Pwllpeiran, and relevant work is also in progress at other research establishments. The Joint Consultative Organisation advises the Agricultural Research Council and the Agriculture Departments on priorities for all State-aided research and development in agriculture and food and the programmes of the various establishments will be subject to continuing evaluation in the light of that advice.
