HC Deb 19 July 1974 vol 877 cc293-4W
Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of hostels for alcoholics in England and Wales; what steps have been taken to improve the availability of treatment centres; and what plans there are for future improvement of the situation.

Dr. Owen

There are about 30 residential establishments for alcoholics in England and Wales although a number of other hostels take residents with drinking problems. A scheme providing central capital and revenue funds to voluntary bodies wishing to establish or expand accommodation for alcoholics was introduced last year. So far 11 new projects have been approved and a further 10 are planned. An extra £2 million was allocated from 1971 spread over four years to expand and improve imminent closure of hospitals in the region.

Dr. Owen

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Eastleigh (Mr. Price) on 17th July.
