asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will state the total amount deducted from pensions in a year in respect of pensioners receiving treatment in hospitals.

Pensioner with a dependant Pensioner without a dependant
After 8 weeks in hospital £2 £4
After 52 weeks in hospital £2* £8†
* Where the balance of the £10 personal benefit is paid, with the pensioner's agreement, to a dependant; otherwise the reduction is £8.
† A £4 "resettlement benefit" accumulates for 52 weeks.
