asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what discussions Her Majesty's Government have recently held with local authorities and water authorities about the future level of their expenditure.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment recently met the Chairman of the National Water Council and the regional water authorities and will do so again after I have met the local authorities, which I expect to do at an early date.
