asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has given consideration to any change in the function and responsibility of the Highlands and Islands Development Board after the establishment of the Highland Regional Council in the new local government structure.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The powers, duties and functions of the Highlands and Islands Development Board were not altered by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. I see a need for the board to continue on its present basis in close co-operation with the new local authorities in its area.
