HC Deb 06 February 1974 vol 868 c331W
Mr. Alexander Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the implementation of the Melville Report on the teaching of mentally handicapped children.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The views of the General Teaching Council for Scotland on the recommendations relating to the registration of teachers are expected in the early part of this year and appropriate training arrangements will be planned as soon as possible thereafter. The legislative provision recommended is embodied in the Education (Mentally-Handicapped Children) (Scotland) Bill, sponsored by the hon. Member for Midlothian (Mr. Eadie) and due to have its Second Reading on 1st March.
