asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the present approved establishment for nurses in the hospitals in Fife; and what, at the latest convenient date, is the number of nurses in post.

There is no approved establishment as such. At 31st December 1973 the number of nurses in post in hospitals in Fife was as follows:

Qualified nurses and midwives 972
Nurses and midwives in training 427
Nursing auxiliaries—nursing assistants 588
Total 1,987
