§ Mr. Churchillasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many civil servants are currently employed by the Department of the Environment; how many of these are employed in the sectors of housing and construction, local government and planning, and transport, respectively; and how many were similarly employed in the former Ministry of Housing and Local Government in 1954 and in 1964.
§ Mr. CroslandExcluding the Property Services Agency there are 25,814 staff in my Department. Of these, and including supporting staff, 710 are on housing and construction work, 15,760 on local government and environmental services including planning and 1,095 on transport industries.
Owing to major reorganisations among the several Departments whose work is now dealt with by my Department, comparable figures for 1954 and 1964 could not be provided except at inordinate cost.
