asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has of the size of capital gains and capital losses accruing to taxpayers, respectively, during the financial year 1973–74.

I regret that information is not available in the exact form requested. It is estimated that the total net capital gains realised in 1973–74 by persons chargeable to capital gains tax is of the order of £750 million, and the corresponding figure for net gains realised by companies in accounting periods ending in 1973–74 and chargeable to corporation tax is of the order of £400 million.
