HC Deb 12 December 1974 vol 883 cc213-4W
41. Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give an estimate of the yeld to the revenue in1973 and 1974 on the basis that short-term social security benefits were taxable.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

The main national insurance short-term benefits are unemployment benefit, sickness and injury benefit and maternity allowance. The estimated additional yields from taxing these benefits are £140 million for 1973–74 and for 1974–75 £200 million. The information on which to base an estimate of the yield from making supplementary benefit taxable is not available.
