asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many adult occupation centres for the mentally handicapped are in existence in Scotland;

(2) how many adults of over 16 years of age in Scotland are currently classified as mentally handicapped;

(3) what is the average age of mentally handicapped adults attending adult occupational centres in Scotland.

At 31st December 1973 there were 7,393 mentally handicapped patients over the age of 15 in hospitals, and 6,826 under the guardianship or voluntary care of local authorities. There were 71 occupation centres for mentally handicapped adults, but the average age of those attending the centres is not available.
