asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many children in Scotland in the age group 5 to 16 years are classified as mentally handicapped.

In January 1974 there were 10,036 children in special schools whose major handicap was ascertained to be mental handicap.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many places there are in special schools in Scotland for mentally handicapped children in the age group 5 to 16 years.

There are 6,321 places in special schools and classes catering solely for mentally handicapped children of school age and 2,425 places in junior occupational centres. In addition, a number of special schools cater for a variety of handicaps, including mental handicap, and a proportion of the 4,822 places in these schools is available for mentally handicapped children.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many qualified teachers of mentally handicapped children are currently employed in Scottish schools.

In January 1974 there were 230 teachers with special qualifications employed in special schools and classes providing solely for mentally handicapped children. There were also teachers with similar qualifications in schools providing for a variety of handicaps but the number is not at present known.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average per capita expenditure on pupils aged 5 to 16 years in Scottish schools for the mentally handicapped.
