HC Deb 04 December 1974 vol 882 c473W
Mrs. Winfred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many graduates of teacher training colleges there were in the last five years; and how many entered the teaching profession.

Mr. William Ross

Numbers of students qualifying as teachers from the colleges of education were as follows:

1970 4,902
1971 5,137
1972 5,911
1973 5,944
1974 (provisional) 5,676

The growth in the teaching force suggests that most of those who qualified entered teaching.

Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take steps to bring minimum conditions of service for teachers in further education in Scotland into line with those in England.

Mr. William Ross

This is a matter for the Scottish Teachers Service Conditions Committee which will have its own views about following English standards.
