Mr. Arthur Davidson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the number of offences recorded as known to the police and the number cleared up in England and Wales in 1973; and how these figures compare with those for 1972.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The provisional number of offences recorded as known to the police in England and Wales in 1973 was 1,357,690 and 574,570—42.3 per cent.—were cleared up.
