HC Deb 03 April 1974 vol 871 cc399-400W
Mr. Ovenden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will take appropriate action to assist deserted wives who face the alternative of homelessness or maintaining mortgage payments which are not their legal responsibility and for which, at present, they cannot receive social security provision.

Mr. O'Malley

The problems faced by deserted wives have been considered very thoroughly by the Finer Committee, whose report is now being studied by the Government, but I shall be glad to consider any specific action my hon. Friend has in mind. Help can be given with repay- ments of mortgage interest for deserted wives who are entitled to supplementary benefit.
