§ Miss Lestorasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many independent schools not recognised as efficient by the Department of Education and Science have applied for such recognition and were refused ;
(2) if she will list the names and addresses of those independent schools in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire that applied for recognition as efficient by her Department and were refused.
§ Mrs. ThatcherArrangements for recognition of schools as efficient have existed since 1906 ; relevant records are incomplete. The standards required for recognition are high, and a school which applies for but fails to secure it may nevertheless be a good school. It would not, therefore, be appropriate to draw a public distinction between a school which had not applied and one which had applied prematurely.
