§ Mr. Prescottasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will implement the recommendations of the Rochdale inquiry into shipping that a statutory marine safety authority be established; and if he will make a statement on the reasons for the decision.
§ Mr. OnslowAs announced on 8th March 1972, it was decided that the balance of advantage lay against setting up a statutory marine authority, and that Ministers should continue to exercise direct responsibility to Parliament for the related questions of safety at sea and marine pollution, and for the establishment of appropriate international and national standards of ship construction, equipment and operation.
