asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many appeals against decisions of local planning authorities he has upheld in each of the last two years.

1,244 planning appeals were allowed in 1971 and 1,442 in 1972. The figures include appeals decided by inspectors.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many appeals against decisions of local planning authorities are at present awaiting his decision.

At 30th April 1973, 15,637 were awaiting decision. Approximately 70 per cent. of these will be decided by Inspectors in accordance with Schedule 9 to the Town and Country Planning Act 1971.

Nine thousand eight hundred and eighteen planning appeals were received in 1971 and 14,408 in 1972.
