HC Deb 12 June 1973 vol 857 cc310-1W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement about the future of the General Teaching Council.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

The decision in the case—Malloch against the Corporation of the City of Aberdeen and the Secretary of State—did not affect the powers and duties placed by statute on the General Teaching Council. A deficiency was, however, revealed in the Secretary of State's power to make regulations regarding the employment of teachers, and the Education (Scotland) Bill is intended to remedy this.
