§ Dr. Stuttafordasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will introduce legislation to require that tobacco substitute materials produced by chemical and other firms be subjected to similar tests to those applied to new drugs before they are introduced to the general public.
§ Mr. AlisonMy right hon. Friend hopes that the arrangements which he has made with industry to supervise the testing of new smoking materials will be sufficient to ensure that all such materials will be subject to toxicological, carcinogenicity, teratological and any other relevant tests, and he does not at present see any need for legislation for this purpose.
§ Dr. Stuttafordasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied that the Hunter Committee is receiving full co-operation from all companies before they introduce tobacco substitute materials.
§ Mr. AlisonThe Hunter Committee has not yet held its first meeting. However, companies are being urged to report to that committee the work they are doing in this field and their findings on the health aspects.
