HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 cc345-6W
Mr. Boyden

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many school leavers are now seeking jobs, and how many have already been placed, in the Bishop Auckland constituency.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Twenty-six school leavers were registered as unemployed on 9th July. This does not include the main body of summer leavers, expected to number about 750. Of these, 211–122 boys and 89 girls—are already known to have received offers of employment.

Mr. Boyden

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many school leavers in the Bishop Auckland constituency obtained office employment during the last 12 months, or other convenient period; what percentage this was of that age group seeking employment; and how this percentage compares with similar school leavers obtaining office employment during the last 12 months, or other convenient period; what percentage this was of that age group seeking employment; and how this percentage compares with similar school leavers obtaining office employment in the South-East Region.

Mr. Dudley Smith

During the 12 months from July 1972 to June 1973, 132 young people under the age of 18 entered crelical employment after full-time education in the area covered by the Bishop Auckland careers office. This was 13.9 per cent. of new entrants to full-time employment in the same age group. During the same period in the London and South Eastern Region 31.3 per cent. of new entrants obtained clerical work.

Dr. Gilbert

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many school leavers are now seeking jobs, and how many have already been placed, in Dudley and Stourbridge.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Ten school leavers were registered as unemployed in the combined Dudley and Stourbridge area on 9th July. This does not include the main body of summer leavers, expected to number about 870. Careers officers estimate that 80 per cent. of these have already obtained offers of employment and that prospects for the rest are good.
