Mr. Arthur Davidson

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will seek powers to increase the penalties for felling scheduled trees, in order to discourage this practice in cases where the object is to increase the development value of land.

I am not convinced that the present maximum penalty for felling trees covered by a tree preservation order coupled with the normal statutory obligation to replant is inadequate. However, my right hon. and learned friend would be prepared to consider any relevant evidence which the hon. Member might like to send him.
