HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 c480W
Mr. Atkinson

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many snakes and other dangerous reptiles are estimated to be imported into the United Kingdom each year.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

No information on these imports is available in this Department.

Mr. Atkinson

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) if he will consult the British Veterinary Association about the need to ban the importting into the United Kingdom of dangerous snakes considered unsuitable for keeping as domestic pets;

(2) if he will consult the British Veterinary Association and the Zoological Society about the unsuitability of keeping non-domesticated animals as pets; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lane

I have been asked to reply.

Apart from a recent incident to which the hon. Member has called my right hon. Friend's attention we have received no representations on these matters, and my right hon. Friend is not at present convinced that it is necessary to initiate consultations with these organisations.
