HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 cc500-1W
Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the numbers unemployed in each of the employment areas in the Leek parliamentary constituency in July 1973; what percentages of the working population they represesent; and how the percentage figure compares with the national percentage figure.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

The following table shows provisional figures for 9th July 1973:

Employment Exchange Area Numbers unemployed Percentage rate of unemployment
Leek 205 1.7
Cheadle 149 Rate not available—see footnote
Biddulph 132
Kidsgrove 320

The rate of unemployment for Great Britain was 2.4 per cent.

Note: Rates of unemployment are calculated by expressing the numbers unemployed as a percentage of the estimated number of employees, employed and unemployed. Cheadle, Biddulph and Kidsgrove are part of the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area for which the unemployment rate was 20 per cent. Rates can be calculated for this area as a whole but not separately for its constituent parts.
