HC Deb 24 July 1973 vol 860 c501W
Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the numbers of unemployed, males and females, respectively, who are registered at the Mexborough and Wombwell employment exchanges at the latest available date; and how these figures compare with the national percentages of unemployed.

Mr. Dudley Smith

On 9th July 1973 there were 954 males and 200 females unemployed in the Mexborough employment exchange area and 323 males and 55 females unemployed in Wombwell. Separate rates of unemployment cannot be calculated for these areas which are parts of travel-to-work areas. The rates for the Mexborough and Goldthorpe travel-to-work area were 6.4 per cent. for males and 3.2 per cent. for females and for the Barnsley, Hoyland, Royston and Wombwell travel-to-work area, 50 per cent. for males and 1.7 per cent. for females. For Great Britain the rates were 3.3 per cent. for males and 1.1 per cent. for females. The figures are provisional.
