HC Deb 18 July 1973 vol 860 c141W
Mr. William Price

asked the Secretary of State for Employment why there was a 20 per cent. increase in the notifiable accidents which resulted in burns to the feet and ankles of persons employed in foundries in 1972.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The total number of accidents of this type notified from foundries was 652 in 1972, a drop of about 10 per cent. from the total of 725 in 1971. Not all these accidents occurred in circumstances now covered by the Foundries (Protective Footwear and Gaiters) Regulations, where, as I told the hon. Member on 28th June, the figures have been estimated at 552 for 1971 and 630 for 1972. However, the latter figure for 1971 is likely to be an under-estimate because it derives from particulars given on statutory notices of accidents which proved insufficient for analysis in many cases.
