HC Deb 18 July 1973 vol 860 cc140-1W
Mr. Harold Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the current number of factory inspectors; and what are the qualifications required and starting salary for men entrants to the inspectorate.

Mr. Dudley Smith

On 1st June 1973 there were 486 general factory inspectors in post, plus 143 specialist inspectors and 36 assistant inspectors.

The entry qualifications for general inspectors are broadly as follows: either an honours or postgraduate degree in any discipline; or an ordinary degree or higher national certificate in a scientific or technological subject, together with three years' subsequent executive or managerial experience.

The starting salary ranges from £1,422 to £1,830 depending on qualifications and experience. There is an additional allowance of £175 in inner London and £90 in outer London.

The qualifications and pay for specialist and assistant inspectors are different.

Mr. Harold Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what increase he proposes to make in the size of the Factory Inspectorate in 1974.

Mr. Dudley Smith

I expect the number of factory inspectors to increase by about 60 during 1974, although this figure will be subject to the reorganisation following the proposed establishment of a safety and health authority.
