HC Deb 09 July 1973 vol 859 c273W
Mr. Hooson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will seek powers to enable the payment of course fees by employers sponsoring unemployed trainees for training as heavy goods vehicle drivers to be borne entirely by his Department.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

Since 1971 my Department has run a scheme for training unemployed persons as heavy goods vehicle drivers in conjunction with the Road Transport Industry Training Board. Under this employers sponsor trainees and meet the cost of training, and the Department pays training allowances, fares and certain fees. My right hon. Friend is now reviewing the working of the scheme and considering alternative possibilities.
