HC Deb 09 July 1973 vol 859 c244W
49. Mr. Wiggin

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement about the future of the Weston-super-Mare coastguard station; and if he is satisfied about the future of lifesaving facilities in that part of the Bristol Channel.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

When the lease of the auxiliary coastguard station on Birnbeck Pier, Weston-super-Mare, expires in December a new station will be opened at another site at Weston. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution will have to withdraw its lifeboats from the pier but will operate an inshore lifeboat from on shore. This will reduce the extent of lifeboat coverage at Weston-super-Mare but the institution will station a second lifeboat at Barry Dock.
