HL Deb 19 December 1973 vol 348 cc454-5WA
LORD MOLSON

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether waste paper from Government Departments is salvaged and sold; what was the quantity sold last year and what was the money received; whether waste paper from the Palace of Westminster is disposed of in a similar way; what was the quantity sold last year and what was the money received.

LORD WINDLESHAM

Waste paper from Government Departments is recovered and sold under arrangements made by H.M.S.O. In the financial year 1972–73 over 25,000 tonnes of various grades were collected and sold for approximately £200,000.

Non-confidential waste paper from the Palace of Westminster is disposed of under the contractual arrangements of H.M.S.O. Confidential waste paper is destroyed under the supervision of House authorities. The quantity of waste paper sold during this period was 108 tonnes. The income was pro rata to the total received by H.M.S.O. under their contractual arrangements.
