Mr. Roderick

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will publish the number of students entering (a) higher education and (b) further education from each local authority in Wales in the past seven years, and the total amounts paid in grants to students in each category in the corresponding areas and years.

Totals for higher education are not available as the returns do not distinguish between advanced and non-advanced courses in FE establishments.

I regret that this information is not available. Grants to students studying at postgraduate level for further degrees are given mainly by research councils and Government Departments whose records do not show

how many of the students are resident in Wales.
