asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) in how many hospitals in England and Wales National Health Service patients can choose to have a single-bedded room;

(2) how many single-bedded rooms are available in hospitals in England and Wales for National Health Service patients who prefer privacy.

Information is not readily available in the form requested. Amenity bed accommodation in single rooms or small wards has been authorised at 753 hospitals in England and Wales and the total amount of accommodation so authorised is 3,935 beds.

This accommodation is available on payment when not required for other patients on medical grounds.
