HC Deb 06 April 1973 vol 854 cc178-9W
Mr. Golding

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what steps he has taken to discuss with the French and Irish administrations a new frequency plan based on the redeployment of VHF bands I and III.

Sir J. Eden

None.

Mr. Golding

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications whether he has accepted the conclusion of the Television Advisory Committee that, before a new frequency plan could be drawn up, decisions would have been taken on whether additional services were to be provided, what was to be their character and what population coverage they were to attain: and whether he will make a statement.

Sir J. Eden

Yes, but the Television Advisory Committee also pointed out that additional television services transmitted on VHF could not be expected to begin before 1985.

Mr. Golding

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications when he expects a new television frequency plan to be ready; and whether he will make a statement.

Sir J. Eden

Not before decisions are taken about broadcasting after 1981.

Mr. Golding

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what steps he is taking to secure additional frequency channels above 216 MHz to make it possible to have two national VHF national television services after 1985.
