HC Deb 09 May 1972 vol 836 cc319-20W
82. Mr. John D. Grant

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many letters he has received seeking a ban on the Iron Maiden in the pig farming industry; and what replies he has given.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

We have received 551 letters of complaint about the so-called Iron Maiden, most of which have called for a ban, and replied that we consider the system to be acceptable under proper management.

Mr. Burden

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will ask the Farm Animal Welfare Advisory Committee to determine the average time that sows are kept in the Protecta farrowing stall, and make recommendations for periods of freedom for exercise.

Mr. Peter Mills

My right hon. Friend is asking the committee to consider all aspects of welfare under this system and the committee is of course free to make any recommendations it considers necessary.
