§ 26. Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's attitude to Spanish membership of the Common Market; and what discussion he had about this in his meeting with Señor Lopez Bravo in Madrid on Monday 27th November 1972.
§ Sir Alec Douglas-HomeIf and when Spain applies for membership this would be a matter for consideration by the Community as a whole. We naturally hope that economic and political circumstances will then be such as to enable Spain to join the Community, if she so desires. But this is a question for the future, and was not discussed in my recent talks with the Spanish Foreign Minister.
§ Mr. Clinton Davisasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement following his official meeting with the Spanish Foreign Minister in Madrid on 27th November 1972.
§ Sir Alec Douglas-HomeI would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave earlier today to the hon. Member for Inverness (Mr. Russell Johnston) and other hon. Members.
