§ Mr. Sydney Chapmanasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many appeals against local planning authority decisions have been determined by him during the last 12 months for which figures are available; what procedures were used in determining these; and what proportion of these appeals was upheld, upheld conditionally and rejected, respectively.
§ Mr. Graham PageDuring the 12 months ended 31st October, 1972, 6,056 planning appeals were decided, 2,054 by the Secretary of State and 4,002 by inspectors. Local inquiries were held in 2,961 cases, the remaining 3,095 being decided by the written method. 4,600 appeals were dismissed and 1,456 allowed. In about 40 per cent. of the appeals allowed conditions were imposed other than the standard ones limiting the life of the planning permission or reserving, for later application and approval, details which were not submitted with the application which was the subject of the appeal.
