HC Deb 08 August 1972 vol 842 cc362-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give the actual or estimated costs of keeping Mr. Maurice O'Regan in custody for eight months pending trial for allegedly stealing Lady Peek's cheques of which he was subquently found innocent.

Mr. Carlisle

In England and Wales in the financial year 1970–71, the latest year for which the information is yet available, the average cost of keeping a prisoner in custody for eight months was about £830.
