provide day nurseries, etc., and how much is given to helping tidy up the underdeveloped areas of the towns.

Mr. Lane

An application from Reading County Borough Council for a variety of different projects is currently being considered under the latest phase of the urban programme. A proposal in May, 1971, for a play group building and adviser was unsuccessful because capital projects were not eligible under that particular phase. The council has made no other applications under the programme, but under Section 11 of the Local Government Act, 1966, the council may claim grant at the rate of 75 per cent. on expenditure estimated to amount in the present year to about £34,000. About £20,000 of this is to be spent on extra teachers and other educational staff, and the remaining £14,000 on extra staff for health and welfare services.
