asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give details of the deaths which occured in public swimming baths and pools in 1970.

Details, so far as known, are as follows:

England and Wales 1970

Deaths stated or presumed to have occurred in public swimming pools or baths:

5 boys aged 3, 6, 6, 9, 11 years—Fell into pool.
1 boy aged 7 years—Wandered away, found in swimming pool.
2 boys aged 9 and 13 years—Out of depth.
1 boy aged 9 years—Accidentally struck by another swimmer jumping in.
1 boy aged 11 years and 1 male aged 21 years—Cramp.
1 boy aged 12 years—Inhaled apple pip.
1 boy aged 13 years and 1 male aged 20 years—Got into difficulties.
2 males aged 18 and 30 years—Diving.
1 male aged 24 years—Effect of cold water— cardiac arrest.
1 girl aged 10 years—Presumably jumped into pool and drowned.
1 boy aged 9 years—During school swimming lesson.
3 boys aged 9, 11 and 11 years and 3 males aged 26, 31, 63 years—Drowned.
Deaths stated to have occurred in school swimming pools:
1 boy aged 6 years—Fell in.
1 boy aged 7 years—Found dead in pool.
1 boy aged 8 years—Found in pool.
Deaths stated to have occurred in hotel or holiday camp swimming pools:
1 boy aged 13 years and 1 male aged 48 years—Drowned.

1 male aged 19 years—Alcoholic intoxication —drowned.
1 male aged 21 years—Drowned—jumped into pool.
1 girl aged 14 years—Drowned.
Total: 33 deaths.
