HC Deb 11 March 1971 vol 813 cc154-5W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Employment for how long an unemployed person from the European Economic Community could remain in the United Kingdom looking for work, under the free movement of labour provisions of the Treaty of Rome.

Mr. Dudley Smith

The current E.E.C. rules are imprecise regarding the period for which an unemployed national of a country of the Community may remain in the territory of another country of the Community to seek work. Clarification of this point will be sought during the forthcoming discussions with the Commission.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what precautions exist, under the free movement of labour provisions of the Treaty of Rome, to ensure that United Kingdom unemployed workers will have first priority for job vacancies in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Under the E.E.C. rules, priority for job vacancies in the United Kingdom would be given to persons already in this country, who are part of the national labour force. Only those jobs which cannot be filled from this source would be notified to Community countries under the E.E.C. vacancy clearance arrangements.
