§ 162. Mr. Edwin Wainwrightasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will give the number of miles of dual three-lane and two-lane motorways now in existence in the United Kingdom; and how many more miles will be completed by 1980.
§ Mr. Graham PageThere are at present 441 miles of dual three-lane and 228 miles of dual two-lane motorway in use in England. The additional mileage to be completed by 1980 will depend on the outcome of the review of inter-urban road strategy which my right hon. Friend is carrying out. Meanwhile over 750 miles of additional motorway are being built or are in preparation, and I expect this will be complete during the next five years.
My right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Scotland and for Wales are responsible for trunk road motorways in those countries.
